I was meant to go to my middle sisters on Sunday to farewell my youngest sister who is returning to China where she and her husband teach English. They have already spent several months there but returned last year as his father was in his final fight with cancer. Now that the fight is over, they are returning to a place they both love. I know they are both really looking forward to it.
So, what sucks? Well, the fact that I didn't make it. I hadn't been feeling all that well for a few days. Nothing that I could put a finger on, just "not quite right"; you all know the feeling. On Saturday I and a few fellow Lions worked at a BBQ in a local park to help a group that were putting on an exercise day followed by a dance party for the local youth. The day was a nice, fairly warm late winters day and I wore a fairly thin long sleeved top. As the afternoon wore on, the breeze picked up and the temperature dropped. As a result, I got very cold. When I went home, all I felt like doing was heading off to bed, which I promptly did. However, even under 2 doonas/duvets/continental quilts I could not get warm, so headed off for a hot bath. (Had a good sleep there as I normally do, lol). Returned to bed and was sleeping by 2000 hours (8:00 PM). Next morning, still not feeling "quite right" and having the occasional tummy cramps, I was up at 0530 with diarrhoea. I wasn't going to my sisters like this. About 0830 my son rang and asked me to go to his house to help him look after his nearly 2 y.o. daughter as his partner was going to work and wasn't confident in him that day as he and another son had stayed up all night partying (lucky them). I told him about being ill, but he said that was ok, I just needed to be there, and that he and his brother would really do the babysitting. It was just for his g/f benefit. I managed most of the day, and the diarrhoea appeared to be over, so all was well. Usually I love being with my children and grandkids, but not that day. Toward 1500 I started to feel "off" again, and at 1730 I decided to head off home. As I was hungry, I decided to have a tomato and lettuce sandwhich and a couple of chocolate biscuits with a cup of coffee. Hit bed around 2300 after laying on the sofa watching a movie, and slept well till around 0300 when again I was awoken with severe cramps and this time also nausea. For the next several hours, the porcelaine throne and myself were best mates, and at one stage I really wished I could just die and get it all over with. At around 1000, I emptied out both top and bottom and exhausted lay on the sofa. Within a few minutes I found the cramping had ceased and from then on there was no more nausea or diarrhoea. Just like that, it was all over.
What else about this sucks is it happened on my days off. I couldn't even get time out of work. Then again, as I am a casual worker, I wouldn't get paid if I didn't work, so maybe it's just as well.
